A Bold Strategy for Mental Health Support

Published: 29 November 2024

At U-evolve, we believe in the transformative power of creating space—space to reflect, grow, and simply be yourself. Our newly launched 2025-2028 strategy, “Creating Space for Young People,” encapsulates this vision by ensuring every young person feels valued, supported, and empowered to thrive in their unique journey.

The Heart of Our Mission

Founded in 2015, U-evolve has consistently championed young people’s mental health. Supporting over 200 individuals annually, we provide free coaching, counseling, and mental health services to Edinburgh’s 11-21-year-olds. Each year, we deliver more than 1,000 hours of individual support, guided by our values of kindness, empathy, inclusivity, collaboration, and continuous learning.

Our mission is simple yet profound: to support young people in feeling better, building confidence, and mastering techniques to take control of their lives. Central to this mission is our commitment to listening—letting young voices lead the way in shaping services that truly meet their needs.

What “Space” Means to Us

During the development of this strategy, young people shared their insights about what space represents. Words like “relief,” “freedom,” and “family” emerged, underscoring the importance of safe and nurturing environments. For many, space is about not having to mask, a place where they can relax, explore their thoughts, and simply be themselves.

Tailored Support for Young People

Our strategy focuses on offering flexible, inclusive mental health support tailored to each individual’s needs. This includes:

  • Drop-in Sessions: Weekly gatherings at our Leith Hub, providing a safe space for creative activities, casual chats, and access to information.
  • Individual Support: One-on-one sessions with mental health coaches, counselors, or art therapists to work through emotions and achieve personal goals.
  • Group Workshops: Dynamic programs on themes like self-esteem, anxiety, and identity, often incorporating art and outdoor activities.
  • Young Voices: Empowering young people to shape U-evolve’s services and future direction through advocacy and volunteering.

A Bold Vision for Mental Health

Our vision is ambitious: to ensure every young person has access to compassionate and inclusive mental health support. By grounding our work in the Mental Health (Scotland) Act, Trauma-Informed Practice, and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, we strive to create a rights-based, empathetic environment where young people can thrive.

Looking Ahead

Over the next three years, we’re committed to:

  1. Expanding our innovative programs to help young people feel better and improve their mental health.
  2. Breaking down barriers to make our services more inclusive and accessible.
  3. Elevating young voices in all aspects of our work.
  4. Investing in our team to lead the way in trauma-informed practices.
  5. Securing financial stability to ensure our impact endures.
